Powering Main Street Through Medical Innovation

Pennsylvania has long been an industrial powerhouse. It is a place where things are made, skills are passed down, and communities grow around industry and strong local employers. Today, the legacy continues as world-leading biopharmaceutical and life science companies invest billions in small communities across the Commonwealth – bringing new life to Main Street economies far beyond the urban centers of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Across Pennsylvania

From the Lehigh Valley to Erie, medical innovation is fueling the businesses that are part of everyday life. When life sciences companies put down roots here, it means steady jobs, new demand for local suppliers and contractors, and paychecks spent at neighborhood shops and restaurants. It also means that Pennsylvania is bolstering America’s position as a world leader in healthcare access and innovation.

The life sciences sector strengthens local economies, supports working families, and helps ensure Pennsylvania remains a driving force behind America’s leadership in medical innovation. Main Street Rx starts here, in the Commonwealth, to show what that looks like close to home.

  • Medical Innovation Powers Local Economies

With more than 3,000 life sciences companies, the sector is a cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s economy – fueling paychecks that are spent at neighborhood barber shops, family-owned restaurants, coffee shops, and Main Street retailers across the Commonwealth.

  • Keeping Medical Progress Close to Home

Pennsylvania communities benefit when medical research, manufacturing and expertise stay rooted here. When innovation stays local, so do the jobs, the opportunity, and the future it creates. Just look at what is happening right now in the Lehigh Valley. Producing medicines closer to home strengthens American pharmaceutical supply reliability and national preparedness.

  • Patients and Communities First

When uncertainty enters the healthcare ecosystem, patients feel it first and communities feel it longest. Stability is not an abstraction. It is the difference between a family getting the care they need and one that cannot.

Here in Pennsylvania, life sciences companies support far more than our own workforce. They sustain local businesses while helping keep friends, family and neighbors healthier. The future of health starts on Main Street – and in the Commonwealth, it already has.

Our Communities

Spotlight on the Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley knows what it means to be an industrial powerhouse – and it knows the cost when industries leave. From steel and coal to manufacturing more broadly, the region has lived through economic shifts that reshaped towns, jobs and Main Streets.

Today, some of the world’s most advanced healthcare innovators are writing the next chapter.

Across Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties, the Lehigh Valley is home to one of Pennsylvania’s deepest life sciences footprints – more than 170 companies employing roughly 7,000 people in medical device, diagnostics and manufacturing. It is home to the U.S. headquarters of B. Braun in Bethlehem and Olympus in Center Valley, alongside homegrown innovators like OraSure.

In January 2026, Eli Lilly chose nearby Fogelsville for a $3.5 billion manufacturing campus – the largest life sciences investment in state history, expected to create roughly 850 jobs.

Where We’ve Been

Where We’re Going

These companies came for the region’s skilled workforce and location at the crossroads of the Northeast. What they leave behind is local jobs that support families, contracts for nearby suppliers and contractors, and steady demand for the restaurants, shops and services that make up Main Street.

“I was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley, so when a company invests billions into our region, the ripple effects reach every corner of our community and the families building their futures close to home.”

Jennifer Wescoe Singley, Executive Director, Wescoe Foundation for Pulmonary Fibrosis

Spotlight on Central Pennsylvania

Across Central Pennsylvania, from Altoona and Hollidaysburg to Chambersburg and Gettysburg, healthcare is both a lifeline and a livelihood. Local colleges and universities are building the workforce pipeline this moment demands, training the next generation of nurses, healthcare professionals, and researchers whose skills will be essential to Pennsylvania’s long-term health and economic strength. That commitment to education and workforce development extends to research and development as well, as regional institutions contribute to the discovery and advancement of treatments that will define tomorrow’s care.

Even without a manufacturing plant down the road, these communities benefit from nearby innovation hubs through supply chains, vendors and regional job opportunities that reach across county lines.

  • "For patients navigating cancer, the impact of the life sciences industry is both personal and profound – driving medical advancements in care while supporting the broader support systems patients rely on every day to help them heal the mind, body and soul."

Marci Schankweiler, Founder and CEO, For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation

  • "The impact of Pennsylvania’s life sciences industry extends well beyond the places where companies are headquartered or research takes place."

Chuck Smith, retired CEO, True North Wellness

About Main Street Rx

Main Street Rx unites employers, workers, small business owners, patients and community leaders around a shared belief: strong local economies and better health outcomes grow together through the support of medical innovation.

But the heart of Main Street Rx is so much more. It is the stories of the people living this reality every day. The restaurant owner whose tables stay full because a new facility brings new neighbors. The nurse whose training opens a door to a career she built without leaving home. The small business owner who lands a contract he never saw coming.

These are the voices that rarely make the headlines. Main Street Rx exists to change that.

Main Street Rx shows, clearly and practically, how investment in medical innovation supports families, fuels Main Street businesses and builds long-term economic resilience in our communities.

And the people who know that best are the ones living it.
